A request… (Really a plea for help)

I want you all to know that I really enjoy publishing this blog.  It truly is a learning experience for me.  I also hope that all of you out there are also learning about writing articles and making some money online.

Unfortunately I think I’ve reached the limit of my abilities in terms of publishing this blog as professionally as possible.   I’m sure more than one of you has noticed the horrible screenshots I put up.

So, with that having been said I have a request, actually several…

  1. Does anyone know of a book, blog, website or anything else that I can go to and read up on WordPress tips
  2. I would also like to find out if there are better photo management plugins available because I’m having a really hard time posting up photos
  3. And finally, I’d like to get a new theme and possibly a logo made.  Anyone know of a good source??

I’d really appreciate any help at all.  I’m really lost with this WordPress stuff and just fumble through it most of the time.

You should have seen my face while I upgraded to 2.7 a few weeks ago…

Anyway, thanks again everyone!!

Hey Norm! Always happy to help. My two favorite blogs/sites for WordPress information and ideas are Smashing Magazine (http://www.smashingmagazine.com/) and Blog Perfume (http://www.blogperfume.com/). There’s a lot of information on those sites, so be prepared to lose yourself for a while! They should have some newbie-friendly stuff for you to dig your teeth into. For templates, there are some very simple but professional freebies at Theme Hybrid (http://themehybrid.com/) or you can purchase gorgeous themes for $45 a pop at Template Monster (http://www.templatemonster.com/category/wordpress-themes/), and there are tons to choose from. I don’t use any photo management plug-ins (I crop/resize the photos myself, upload to a folder on my site, then add them to my posts using a simple bit of HTML code). If a code snippet would help you out, just let me know! Getting a logo/theme custom-made will depend on how much you want to spend. elance.com, rentacoder.com, getafreelancer.com, etc all have places where you can post project requests for a logo and theme, or you could go the Craig’s List route. I’d be happy to help you myself, but again it depends on what you’re looking for. :-) I hope this helps though!!

Oops — I think my comment just got flagged as spam since it had so many links in it. ;-) Let me know if it didn’t show up, or shoot me an email and I’ll send you the links that way. Cheers!

Scarlett, wow! I will be checking out these sources as well.

Norm, I guess I must not know much about blogs at all because I thought your screen shots were good. :)

Hi,
I customise wordpress blogs and 2 plugins/code I use to automate resizing/cropping photos is
1. timthumb http://www.darrenhoyt.com/2008/04/02/timthumb-php-script-released/
but it really automates cropping and resizing, so although it is a time saver it does not give you control to override a thumb that is not particularly attractive
2. Get the Imgage – wp plugin by Justin Tadlock. It automates resizing/cropping pictures AND gives you control to override thumbnails manually using custom fields.

They are both good, it is just a matter of personal preferences. Both authors also explained how to use it, modify it and style it.

Experiment with it and see which one you like.
Now, shameless plug: I make wordpress themes so if you want to save time I can make one for you with ads panel, sleek featured posts area sliders, drop down menus and all other fancy stuff;)

Just this moment began the search for online earnings. Your site is terrific for getting the mind in gear. Gets the juices flowing and plenty of solid info. to check out. You have been deemed a “WORTHY” by “he who speaks to water”. I began today very reticent about the prospect of whaling through all the B.S. out here, and now I’m enthused. You did that for me. What a gift. Thanks. Many blessings upon you……..Dave

http://www.pixlr.com/ for handling your photos.

As far as WP, go to delicious.com and search for WordPress

As far as getting a new logo? http://www.fiverr.com/

Now, rinse, wipe hands on pants and repeat as needed.

Good day.
